Organic Gardening for Sustainable Living
My interest is spreading the word and practice of growing local food—especially organic greens, a highly nutritious, low fat food needed by everybody over and over again. I’ve grown greens for 21 years - I'm still making good money doing it and still happy gardening and contributing to the health of others!
Buying food is an endlessly repeated, unavoidable, political act. We hold power in our choices. We cast our opinions with our pocketbooks. With degenerative illnesses seriously endangering personal, national and global public health, humanity needs to reconsider how we live and what we eat.
Food Politics
While food choices are endless, the politics of food and awareness of nutrition and resulting health care can clearly guide us. I disagree with the prevailing mentality that “Whole Foods” are more expensive than prepared and refined grains, fats, corn syrup and chemicals with fancy packaging. If we factor in the costs of health problems linked to industrialized food, garbage fees—and their associated carbon footprint—to the food budget, then Whole Foods are incredibly less expensive!
Small-Scale Farming
The salad greens and organic gardening methods are simply and plainly described in our organic farming DVD video and the accompanying book, “Growing Greens for Love and Money.” There’s nothing very complicated about this sort of gardening—no ladders, trellises, stickers, peelings, pits, deep roots, heavy weight, twining, vining, volume, weight, or debt.
Successful Organic Gardening
Slow and steady maintenance is the key to successful greens gardening. The model explained in our gardening video could fit into any large city lot—or five acres in the countryside. However, less than a half an acre is needed. This is a perfect agricultural model for commercial urban gardening!
Healthful Gardening Large or Small
The basis of my little business and agricultural activity is a 2000 sq.ft. (30 x 72) industrial-grade greenhouse made of metal pipe and 6 mil plastic. My greenhouse is the best toy (I mean tool) that I’ve ever acquired. If location or finances disallowed having a greenhouse, I would build sturdy cold frames with removable plastic coverings. The same gardening techniques described in our gardening DVD and book would still apply.
